Since the construction of the Western Railway, the importance of the Danube crossing increased. In 1897 a roller ferry went into operation and the Melk arm of the Danube was crossed by a pontoon bridge. This was destroyed several times by floods, so the lift bridge was built in 1937.
16 strong men were able to raise the 123-ton Leopold Bridge three meters via four hoisting winches in four hours of work. In 1952 it was converted to electric operation.
With the construction of the flood protection in 2013, a viewing platform was also built at the Melk oxbow. From here you have an unrestricted view of the Altane in front of the collegiate church. The Leopold Bridge remained untouched. It was already closed to car traffic from 2009.
