Melk's lift bridge is a centuries-old link between the ‘Kolomaniau’ and the old town, which provides access to Melk's surrounding nature, the shipping pier at ‘Hafenspitz Melk’, the event site ‘Wachauarena’, as well as a modern observation platform offering the perfect photo opportunity.
The Lift Bridge – Saint Leopold Bridge
The importance of the Danube crossing increased with the construction of the Western Railway:
In 1897, a cable ferry went into operation and a pontoon bridge was built to cross the Melk river.
This was destroyed several times by flooding, which is why the lift bridge was initially built in 1937.
In 4 hours of work, 16 muscular men were able to raise the 123-tons Saint Leopold Bridge 3 metres using only 4 hoisting winches.
In 1952 it was eventually converted to electric operation.
In 2009 it was already closed to motorised traffic.
The Observation Platform – Photo Location
When the flood protection was built in 2013, a observation platform was also constructed on Melk's old arm of the Danube.
From here there is an unrestricted view of the Abbey, especially of its balcony in front of the church.
Tip: Seize this moment and take the opportunity to photograph and capture the monastery in all its glory!
