The incomparable, baroque Abbey Melk is certainly one of the most famous sights in and around Melk. However, the historic old town itself is also included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a number of historical and architectural treasures are hidden within it.
Melk and its rich history, spanning over 1,000 years, can be explored on your own along various Themed Trails: These include remains of the town wall, a beautifully designed cottage villa neighbourhood, a centuries-old vine protected as natural monument, as well as a Gothic memorial plaque referencing verses from the renowned heroic epic, 'The Song of the Nibelungs'.
However, there are also more recent sites to discover: There is an Open-Air Art Mile which is constantly being expanded and offers a blend of contemporary sculptures and historical artworks. Then there is the 1886-established Town Park featuring a 2018-established nature trail for trees, as well as allotment gardens alongside the railway, which are a common sight in many parts of Central Europe.
Melk is nature and history, leisure and culture.
